PETROLEUM ENGINEERING

East Ukraine Volodymyr Dahl National University offers the Petroleum engineering course. Petroleum engineering is an engineering discipline concerned with the activities related to the production of hydrocarbons, which can be either crude oil or natural gas. Subsurface activities are deemed to fall within the upstream sector of the oil and gas industry, which are the activities of finding and producing hydrocarbons. Refining and distribution to a market are referred to as the downstream sector.

Exploration, by earth scientists, and petroleum engineering are the oil and gas industry's two main subsurface disciplines, which focus on maximizing economic recovery of hydrocarbons from subsurface reservoirs. Petroleum geology and geophysics focus on provision of a static description of the hydrocarbon reservoir rock, while petroleum engineering focuses on estimation of the recoverable volume of this resource using a detailed understanding of the physical behavior of oil, water and gas within porous rock at very high pressure. The duration of the course is 4 years, the degree awarded is bachelors.

If we are to reach these goals, we believe we must give our students the best possible preparation to enter this industry. Our curriculum gives every student a solid foundation in petroleum engineering fundamentals, but we also insist on experience in the industry. As a result, our graduates will enter the industry ready to be productive contributors, but they also will understand the need to continue to learn and improve their skills throughout their careers. The four-year curriculum in petroleum engineering includes sufficient training in basic engineering sciences to prepare the graduate for the application of engineering principles to the petroleum industry.

To the basic subjects are added courses in petroleum engineering which illustrate the application of the engineering principles to the type of problems and solution methods used in the petroleum industry. The Petroleum Engineering program at EUNU  is a modern and challenging degree and offers a unique look at the problems confronting the petroleum industry.

Petroleum engineers are employed in very diverse range of occupations including well-log analyst, drilling engineer, production engineer or reservoir engineer. A well-log analyst evaluates a well's potential and a drilling engineer is responsible for finding oil and gas, designing and drilling the well as cheaply as possible. The job of a production engineer is to analyse and optimise the performance of individual wells, to determine how to bring the fluid to the surface and to develop a system of surface equipment that separates the oil, gas, and water.

Reservoir engineers determine the fluid and pressure distributions throughout the reservoir, the natural energy sources available, and the methods to recover the maximum amount of oil or gas from the reservoir.
